Uzbekistan and Argentina Strengthen Ties in Dried Fruit Production

As part of the ITC project Trade Promotion East: Uzbekistan, funded by Swiss Government (SECO) and in collaboration with the World Bank, a delegation of Uzbek dried fruit producers and government representatives recently visited San Rafael, Argentina—a key hub for prune production.

During the visit, the delegation explored Argentina’s advanced horticultural practices, touring leading companies Pietrelli and Frutas Proa, both of which produce approximately 5,000 tons of prunes annually. The trip provided valuable insights into Argentina’s production methods and market strategies, offering a comparative perspective on Uzbekistan’s growing dried fruit industry.

Key Takeaways from the Visit

The delegation identified several important differences and similarities between prune production in Uzbekistan and Argentina:

• Climate & Growing Conditions: Both regions are suitable for plum cultivation, but Argentina benefits from a more stable climate, while Uzbekistan experiences extreme summer heat and winter frosts.

• Varieties & Yield: Uzbekistan grows diverse plum varieties, including those adapted to hot climates, whereas Argentina primarily cultivates the French D’Agen variety, prized for its drying properties. Advanced agricultural techniques give Argentina a slight edge in yield efficiency.

• Drying & Processing: Uzbekistan’s hot climate allows for faster sun drying, but maintaining consistent moisture levels and quality control presents challenges.

• Market Focus: Argentina is a leading global supplier of prunes, focusing on Western markets, while Uzbekistan is rapidly expanding its exports, primarily targeting CIS countries and China.

Future Opportunities for Uzbekistan

While Argentina remains a dominant player in the global prune industry, Uzbekistan is well-positioned for growth. By expanding intensive orchards and investing in modern processing technologies, the country can significantly enhance both its production capacity and product quality.

This visit marks an important step in fostering international cooperation, knowledge exchange, and industry development, strengthening Uzbekistan’s position in the global dried fruit market.
